Four kinds of AI video tool, and which one you need
Everything markets itself as an “AI video generator”, which is why so many people pick the wrong one. The categories are genuinely different. Here is how to tell them apart — including where we are the wrong answer.

The four categories
Almost every tool in this space is one of these. Work out which row describes your job and the shortlist becomes short.
1. Clip generators
Prompt in, a few seconds of video out. Unbeatable for a single striking shot or B-roll. They have no memory between clips, so characters change, and assembling minutes of footage is manual work you do yourself.
2. Slideshow builders
Stock footage and images cut to a script and a voiceover. Fast and cheap for marketing and listicles. Nothing is invented, so anything that needs a specific character or an original world is out of reach.
3. Avatar and presenter tools
A synthetic person reads your script to camera. Excellent for training, sales and explainers. It is one presenter in one room — not a story with scenes.
4. Story engines
You give a premise; the tool writes a script, casts characters, storyboards scenes, animates, voices and cuts them together. Slower and less controllable per shot, but it is the only category that produces a finished narrative film. This is what Cinefables is.
Five questions that actually separate tools
Feature lists are near-identical across this category. These questions are not.
Does a character survive between shots?
Generate the same character twice. If the face changes, the tool builds each shot from your words alone and cannot hold a story together. This is the single most useful test.
What happens past two minutes?
Ask for four minutes. A tool without real story structure produces scenes that no longer connect, or simply stops. Structure has to be planned before the first frame is drawn.
Can you fix one scene?
If scene four is wrong, can you re-render only scene four? If the answer is regenerate everything, iteration is expensive and you will settle for worse output.
What happens when a render fails?
Generation fails sometimes, for everyone. The question is whether you are charged for it. Automatic refunds for failed work should be table stakes and frequently are not.
Does it work in your language?
Most tools mean English. If you publish in Hindi, Malayalam or Tamil, test the actual narration before you commit — subtitles on an English film are not the same thing.
Where Cinefables fits, plainly

- There isn't one, and any page that names a single winner is selling something. The category splits into four kinds of tool that solve genuinely different problems — clip generators, slideshow builders, avatar tools and story engines. Pick the category that matches your job first; the choice within a category matters far less.
- When is Cinefables the wrong tool?
- If you need one striking five-second shot, a clip generator is faster and cheaper. If you need a talking-head explainer of your own script, an avatar tool is a better fit. If you need frame-level control over camera and timing, use an editor. Cinefables is for narrative shorts with characters, and it is a poor substitute for any of those three.
- How do I compare cost between tools?
- Compare cost per finished minute, not per generation. A cheap clip generator that needs eleven retries and manual editing to reach one usable minute is not cheap. Also check whether failed generations are refunded — many tools charge for them.
- What should I test before committing?
- Generate the same character twice and see whether the face survives. Ask for something over two minutes and see whether it has a structure or just stops. Try your actual language, not English. Those three tests separate the categories faster than any feature list.
- Does it matter which underlying models a tool uses?
- Much less than vendors imply. Models change every few months and everyone gets access to similar capability. What persists is what a tool builds around them — whether it keeps characters consistent, whether it plans a story, whether it refunds you when a render fails.
